How do I request enhanced military honors and interment?

All Military funeral honors must be arrange through the Commander or Direct at Camp Nelson Honor Guard Head Quarters. You must have a copy of deceased working dog’s DD214.
We must have this form to proceed with any Military Honor and/or Interment.


What are Military Honors?

At this time, there is no law governing the Military Honors for the Working Dog, Hopefully, in the future, the Department of Defence will provide Military Honors at no cost to the handler or owner of the deceased working dog.
We will update our services as the laws governing military working dogs are passed by our legislators.

We will provide, at NO COST to the handler or owner, a place of interment at Camp Nelson Military Working Dog National Memorial Cemetery.

  • We will provide opening and closing of interment site for the cremains only. No full casket burials.
  • We will provide memorial head stone – upright granite.
  • We will provide perpetual care.


Full & enahanced Military Funeral Honor/Ceremonies Provided by Camp Nelson Honor Guard:

  • Single Horse Caisson
  • Military War Dog from the branch of the deceased K9 to serve as an escort to the caisson during the service.
  • Fold and present our nation’s flag to the handler/owner of the deceased K9. *If there is no one to receive the flag, it will go to our Avenue of Flags that lines the drive leading to the cemetery on War Dog Memorial Day.
  • A Three Volley Firing Detail (21 gun salute)
  • One round fired from ligt artillery piece.
  • The playing of Taps.

**We are all volunteer honor guard and Military Honors are not guaranteed. Honors are contingent upon the availability of personnel.


Services That are not Provided

  • Cremation of the deceased K9
  • Cremains container or urn
  • Transportation to the cemetery. it is the responsibility of the owner to transport the cremains to the cemetery. *If the owner/handler wishes to have the K9 interred and not be present, It is the reponsibility of the owner/handler to pay for shipping fees.


How are we Funded?

Camp Nelson Honor Guard, Inc. is a non-profit organization that provides full and enhanced military funeral honors for our nations’s hero’s. We are registered with the Secretary of State office of Kentucky. We file an annual report each year as a non-profit and we are also a 501-C3. All donations are tax deductible.
